Self-sufficiency and Minimalism

"Minimalism" is a new catch word, and it has caught me.  I follow several blogs that offer good ideas for simplifying your life by employing simple tactics like removing the clutter from your closets, keeping a clean desk, etc.  I have been applying minimalism and self-sufficiency in some areas of my life for decades; I'm trying to apply it to all areas of my life today.  I believe minimalism and self-sufficiency have a lot in common, and practicing both can reduce your expenses.  This is particularly important when our government makes it difficult for the average Joe to make ends meet.

I'm proud to say that in 37 years of marriage, I can count on one hand the number of times I've been to the barber shop.  Marie has cut my hair all those years.  That's a lot of money!

Last week, as I reached for the soap in the shower, I was down to one of those unmanageable little slivers of soap that the bar gets down to after a couple of weeks.  You know exactly what I'm talking about.  Like me, you probably drop it on the drain and play that silly game where you try to force it down the drain while the thing slips from beneath your foot.  As I struggled with the soap sliver, I came up with a useful idea ...

I have shaved with a soap cup for at least 20 years.  I don't even know what a can of shaving cream costs, but I suspect it is significantly more than shaving soap.  There on the shower floor was another cost saver.  I picked the sliver up and put it in my soap cup.  It will last a week or two.  Bottom line: no more soap slivers down the drain.  I'll use that Irish Spring til there is no more.

Stay alert for ways to simplify your life and reduce your expenses through self-sufficiency and minimalism.
